Afrika Nå: Are Africans invisible in Norwegian policies?

The decade from 2015 to 2024 has been proclaimed the International Decade for People of African Descent by the UN. The UN advise all states to "Celebrate the launch of the International Decade at the national level, and develop national programmes of action and activities for the full and effective implementation of the Decade". However, in Norway, the state has not taken any initiative regarding the Decade, and they are not planning to. Why is the Decade not a priority for the government?

The event will take place at Kulturhuset in Oslo from 18:00-19:30 on the 30th of January.

Approximately 100 000 people living in Norway today are of African decent. What challenges do they experience growing up and living in the Norwegian society, and how does this influence their sense of identity? How has Norway historically treated people of African decent? And what is the way forward?

Dawit Shawel Abebe, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Health, Oslo Met. His research focuses on risk factors and developmental trends of mental health problems from adolescence to adulthood

Michell Sibongiseni Mpike, researcher, facilitator and founder of Inklusive Books - a publishing house focusing on publishing diverse and inclusive literature, particularly for children

More panelists TBA.

The event is free and open to all!
