Afrika Nå: Ethiopia - emergency or opportunity?

Is it okay for Norwegian companies to invest in a country where human rights are violated? Could investment lead to further development and democratization? And is Ethiopia at a political crossroad, or will it just be more of the same?

The Norwegian Council for Africa invites you all to a heated and constructive debate about these issues in an event inspired by the Oxford-style debate. Here the format features a sharply framed question that is proposed by one side and opposed by another.

In November, the Crown prince and princess visited the country with a large delegation of Norwegian companies. Though saluted for engaging in health and education in Ethiopia, the delegation was also criticized for not addressing the human rights situation. Is it the responsibility of businesses investing in Ethiopia to address these violations?

The prime minister of Ethiopia, announced his resignation on February 15, and the country declared a state of emergency that will last for six months. He said that his resignation was an essential part of the reforms required to restore peace in Ethiopia. Hundreds have been killed and thousands arrested during nearly three years of anti-government protests. Will this yield real political change in the country?

Participants:
