Spotlight on Nigeria

The Norwegian Council for Africa proudly presents four public events in three days that shed lights on some of the most prominent political and social issues in Nigeria today. We have cooperated with the film festival Films from the South, PRIO, the Church of Norway Council on Ecumenical and International Relations and the Norwegian Human Right Fund (NHRF) in the planning of these events.

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with more than 180 million people divided on 250 different ethnic groups with their own languages. This means that one in every 6 African is a Nigerian. The country is Africa’s largest economy and the continent’s largest oil producer, and an important player in the global oil industry. Nigeria is an influential actor on the African continent and beyond. It has played a central role in African peace keeping forces on the continent, as much as itself has been a battle ground for violent uprisings, terrorism, militarism and international counter-terrorism. Nollywood, the Nigerian movie industry, has been ranked the second largest movie producer in the world behind Bollywood. Nigerian music has gained a prominent role in the music world, it has provided the world with some of the finest football players, not to mention the many taste experiences Nigerian food offers. Nigeria is both exciting and important, and, in other words, there is much more to the West-African country than what many think.
